Capacity overview

Microsoft Fabric keeps only a short window of capacity usage data. Soterre PBI Analyzer collects that data every day and stores it in its own database, building a longer history than Fabric retains.

That history is what the rest of this section is based on: daily CU trends and the breakdown by workspace and item. It is also what Soterre reads when it shows capacity data.

Where the data comes from

The Microsoft Fabric Capacity Metrics app. It has to be installed in your tenant and pointed at a capacity — see Capacity Metrics app.

Where you read it

In Soterre, under Fabric Capacity Usage.

Pick a capacity and a window — 7, 14, 30, 60 or 90 days. The header shows its SKU, region and which connection collected it, and when the data was last updated.

Four tiles summarise the window: Total CU, Average per day, the Busiest day, and the Top workspace with its share of the total. Average and busiest are also given as a percentage of what the capacity could supply in a day.

CU per day charts each day, split into Background and Interactive use. Click a day to see what used it, or switch to By workspace to chart the workspaces separately.

Below the chart, what used the capacity.

Reading CU figures

Everything is counted in CU-seconds. A capacity provides its CU allowance every second, so a day's budget is capacityUnits × 86,400 CU-seconds. Usage is measured the same way, which makes "40 % utilized" a ratio of two comparable quantities.

SKUs it recognizes

F2–F2048, P1–P5, EM1–EM3, A1–A6, and trial capacities, across the Fabric, Premium, Embedded, Azure and Trial tiers. For an unrecognized SKU there is no daily limit to divide by, so utilization and limit figures are reported as unknown. See the SKU reference.
