How it works
Soterre PBI Analyzer runs on your own server. You never open it directly — you work in Soterre, and Soterre asks the analyzer to do the work.
What happens when you run an analysis
You pick a report in Soterre
You choose the report and start an inspection. Soterre sends the analyzer the report's identity, and nothing else.
The analyzer fetches the report itself
It signs in to your Power BI tenant with its own service account and downloads a copy of the report.
It inspects the copy
It reads the semantic model, the formulas and the report pages, runs every check, and works out the Health Score. Your report in Power BI is never opened, changed or refreshed.
Soterre shows you the result
Flags, findings and the score appear in Soterre, and are stored there so you can compare them against the next version.
What it reaches out to
| It connects to | For |
|---|---|
| Your Power BI tenant | Downloading the report it was asked to inspect |
| The Fabric Capacity Metrics app | Reading capacity usage, if you use capacity monitoring |
Both are read-only. The analyzer never publishes, changes, deletes or refreshes anything in your tenant.
Nothing is sent outside your organisation. The analyzer runs on your server, the results go to your Soterre, and no data reaches Motio.
Who sees what
The analyzer does not decide that. Which reports and capacities a person can see is set by their permissions in Soterre, exactly like the rest of Soterre.
Why capacity history lives on your server
For report analysis the analyzer works on request and hands the result to Soterre.
Capacity is different: it collects on a schedule, every night, and keeps the history in its own database. Microsoft only retains 30 days of capacity data, so the nightly copy is what lets you look back further. See daily collection and history.
The parts an administrator sees
Worth knowing they exist, though only whoever installs the analyzer touches them.
| The service | The analyzer itself, running in the background on your server |
| The launcher | A small window showing whether the service is running |
| The admin console | Where tenant connections and the Soterre connection are set up. Reachable only from the server itself |
Setting these up is covered in Install the service.
